During Year 3 and Year 4, children will develop and secure how to plan their writing, how to write in paragraphs and use organisational devices such as sub-headings.
Children will develop their grammatical knowledge whilst learning about fronted adverbials, Standard English verb inflections, adverbs and prepositions.
Throughout the two years in Lower Key Stage 2 (year 3 and year 4), children work on being able to identify themes in a range of books, perform plays and poetry aloud and retell some fairy/traditional stories.
There will also be a focus on inference, justification, summarising and how language contributes to meaning.
Maths in Year 3 and Year 4 focuses on solving a range of problems, including problems with fractions. A great emphasis is placed on pupils developing their mathematical reasoning and increasing accuracy.
By the end of Year 4 is it expected that pupil know their multiplication tables up to and including the 12 multiplication table.
During key stage 2 pupils learn about a wider range of living things, materials and phenomena.
They begin to make links between ideas and to explain things using simple models and theories. They apply their knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas to familiar phenomena, everyday things and their personal health. They begin to think about the positive and negative effects of scientific and technological developments on the environment and in other contexts. They carry out more systematic investigations, working on their own and with others. They use a range of reference sources in their work. They talk about their work and its significance, and communicate ideas using a wide range of scientific language, conventional diagrams, charts and graphs.
